Wellbeing in the Digital Era

Mytilene Castle View

About The Workshop

Contemporary society is characterised by the widespread uptake and rapid integration of technologies aiming to improve the capacity and productivity through the restoration or extension of human physical, intellectual and social capabilities. In this context, digital wellbeing has emerged as a novel concept that gives expression to the delicate balance between benefits and drawbacks that people experience in an ever increasing digital world.

The Internation workshop “Wellbeing in the Digital Era” aims to investigate how our conceptual understanding of well-being has been altered by emerging technologies.

Relevant topics include but are not limited to:

  • How do we define wellbeing within the evolving ecosystems of the digital era?
  • How does digital transformation impact humans, non-humans, and the environment?
  • Do we have the theoretical frameworks and technological tools to ensure wellbeing for all?
  • What role do regulation and ethics play in shaping digital transformation?

The event is organized by the Cultural Informatics Lab of the University of the Aegean, within the framework of the WELLBEING project which explores the intersection of posthumanist thinking and software engineering aiming to shape a practical philosophy for the digital age.

Venue

Join the Wellbeing in the Digital Era Workshop at the University of the Aegean and
experience the charm of Mytilene. Convenient travel options and nearby accommodations ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

The Workshop will be held at the University of the Aegean, University Hill. The University of the Aegean represents a historical attempt for the Greek University area, since its foundation in 1984. The University of the Aegean is a multi-insular entity with units/Schools and Departments located on six (6) Aegean islands and in this regard is the most geographically dispersed university of the country. Basic and applied scientific research at international, national, regional and local level has been carried out in all Departments by the scientific staff of the University through various projects, publications and conferences (applied research, development interventions, etc.).

Mytilene is the capital and main port of Lesvos located on the eastern coast of the island, opposite the shores of Turkey. It is built amphitheatrically between seven beautiful verdant hills which end to the natural port. The town consists of old neighborhoods and picturesque suburbs whereas the interesting structures and the archaeological monuments witness the rich heritage of the island. The Conference will be held at the University of the Aegean.

Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos Island, is accessible by both air and sea, offering convenient travel options for visitors.

  • By Air: Aegean Airlines and Sky Express operate multiple daily flights between Athens (ATH) and Mytilene (MJT), with a flight duration of approximately 50 minutes.
  • By Sea: Lesvos is well-connected to mainland Greece and other islands via ferry. Blue Star Ferries offers regular routes from Piraeus (Athens) to Mytilene. Timetables and ticket reservations can be found at www.bluestarferries.com.

For those arriving by ferry, the port of Mytilene is centrally located, with taxis and public transportation available for onward travel.

There are several accommodation options close to the University, offering comfortable stays at reasonable prices. Below are some hotels near University Hill:

  • Elysion Hotel – A modern and elegant hotel offering a range of deluxe rooms with premium amenities.
  • Heliotrope Hotel – A well-located hotel featuring spacious rooms and excellent sea views.
